Engineering Design Challenges

Bridge building, towers, catapults, marble runs, and challenge-based projects that develop real engineering thinking. Kids problem-solve, test, redesign, and compete in fun hands-on builds.

Ages 5–12 Hands-On Engineering Daily Challenges Build · Test · Redesign

How this program works

Engineering Design Challenges run as part of our rotating weekly STEM labs. Kids take on a new engineering mission each day using simple materials and real-world engineering steps.

  • Weekly labs: Integrated Mon–Fri on the Weekly STEM Schedule.
  • Included in all memberships: 1 Day, 3 Days, and Unlimited.
  • Challenge themes rotate: Engineering, physics, structures, and motion.

What kids build

  • Marble runs with jumps, turns, and stability rules
  • Catapults, launchers, and trajectory challenges
  • Bridges, towers, and weight-bearing structures
  • Egg-drop protection designs
  • Paper roller coasters and ball-run engineering
  • Balloon-powered cars and moving systems

All challenges include building time, testing time, and the “redesign” round — the core of real engineering.

Skills they develop

  • Critical thinking & scientific reasoning
  • Measurement, stability, and structural principles
  • Persistence through trial & error
  • Team collaboration
  • Innovation and creative problem-solving
